Equipment

  • large mixing bowl
  • large skillet
  • whisk
  • wooden spoon
  • measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ground allspice
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp oil or butter for frying
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup milk or cream
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 tbsp lingonberry jam
  • salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, soak the breadcrumbs in milk for 1 minute. Add beef, onion, garlic, egg, parsley, nutmeg, allspice, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
  • Roll the mixture into evenly sized meatballs, about 1 to 1½ inches wide.
  • Heat oil or butter in a skillet over medium heat. Brown meatballs on all sides in batches, then remove and set aside.
  • Melt butter in the same skillet. Whisk in flour for 1 minute, then slowly add beef broth. Stir in milk, Dijon mustard, and lingonberry jam until smooth.
  • Return meatballs to the skillet, cover, and simmer on low for 10–15 minutes until cooked through. Season to taste.
  • Serve hot over mashed potatoes with peas and extra lingonberry jam on the side.

Notes

For best flavor, avoid overmixing the meatballs and let them rest briefly in the gravy before serving. Cranberry or red currant jam can be used if lingonberry jam is unavailable.
