Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup hot coffee (or hot water)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 200 g dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 1/4 tsp salt (for frosting)

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 8-inch round cake pans, line with parchment, and dust with cocoa powder.
  • Whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  • Add eggs, oil, buttermilk, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth and well combined.
  • Slowly pour in the hot coffee while mixing on low speed until the batter is thin and smooth.
  • Divide batter evenly between pans and bake for 30–35 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Cool cakes for 10 minutes, then transfer to a rack to cool completely.
  • Heat cream until just simmering and pour over chopped chocolate and butter. Let sit, then stir smooth.
  • Whisk in cocoa powder, powdered sugar, vanilla, and salt. Cool until spreadable.
  • Frost the cooled cake layers and let set for 30 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Use room-temperature ingredients for best results. Hot coffee enhances the chocolate flavor without adding coffee taste. Let the frosting cool before spreading so it sets into a smooth, fudgy layer.
