Equipment

  • large skillet
  • mixing bowl
  • baking dish
  • wooden spoon or spatula
  • aluminum foil

Ingredients

  • olive oil
  • onion, finely diced
  • ground beef
  • Italian sausage
  • garlic, minced
  • marinara sauce
  • chicken broth
  • tomato paste
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • hot sauce (optional)
  • ricotta cheese
  • egg
  • shredded mozzarella cheese
  • grated Parmesan cheese
  • Italian seasoning
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • lasagna noodles
  • extra shredded mozzarella cheese for topping

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, mix ricotta cheese, egg, shredded mozzarella, Parmesan, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper until smooth and well combined. Set aside.
  • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Cook the onion until soft, then add ground beef and Italian sausage and brown completely. Stir in garlic, marinara sauce, chicken broth, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and optional hot sauce. Simmer for 15–20 minutes.
  • If using traditional noodles, cook lasagna noodles in salted boiling water until just al dente, then drain and lay flat. Skip this step if using no-boil noodles.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread a thin layer of meat sauce in a baking dish. Layer noodles, cheese filling, and meat sauce, repeating until finished. Top with shredded mozzarella.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake 10–15 minutes more until bubbly and lightly golden. Rest 15 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Let the lasagna rest for at least 15 minutes before slicing to help the layers set. You can substitute cottage cheese for ricotta, use no-boil noodles to save time, or make it vegetarian with mushrooms or lentils. This dish reheats beautifully and tastes even better the next day.
