Ingredients
  

  • 4 large potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 300 g ground beef or chicken
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tomatoes, diced
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper
  • salt to taste
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 cup grated mozzarella cheese
  • 0.5 cup grated cheddar cheese
  • 0.5 cup cooking cream
  • 0.25 cup milk
  • fresh parsley or basil for garnish

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 200°C (390°F). Peel and thinly slice the potatoes, soak in cold water for 10 minutes, then drain and pat dry.
  • Heat olive oil in a pan, cook onion and garlic until soft, then add ground meat and cook until browned.
  • Add tomatoes, tomato paste, paprika, oregano, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 10 minutes until thickened.
  • Grease a baking dish. Layer potatoes, meat mixture, and a bit of cheese. Repeat layers, ending with potatoes.
  • Mix cream and milk, pour over casserole, then top with remaining cheese.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes, then uncover and bake another 20 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  • Let rest a few minutes, garnish with parsley or basil, and serve.

Notes

You can substitute ground beef with chicken for a lighter option, or use lentils or mushrooms for a vegetarian version. Use low-fat cheese and cream to reduce calories. Let the casserole rest 5–10 minutes before serving for easier slicing. Add chili flakes for a spicy kick.
