Equipment

  • large pot for boiling potatoes
  • potato masher
  • large mixing bowl for biscuits
  • baking sheet
  • large skillet for searing steak
  • cutting board and knife

Ingredients

  • 1.5 pounds sirloin or ribeye steak, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 4 tablespoons butter (for steak)
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt (for steak)
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 0.5 cup milk, warm
  • 4 tablespoons butter (for mashed potatoes)
  • salt to taste (for mashed potatoes)
  • 3 cups broccoli florets
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (for broccoli)
  • 1 tablespoon butter or olive oil (for broccoli)
  • pinch of salt (for broccoli)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt (for biscuits)
  • 0.5 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 0.5 cup cold butter, cubed
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (for biscuits)
  • 0.75 cup milk (for biscuits)

Instructions

  • Place peeled and chopped potatoes in a large pot. Cover with cold water and add a generous pinch of salt. Bring to a boil and cook until fork-tender, about 15–20 minutes. Drain thoroughly, return to the pot, add warm milk and butter, and mash until smooth and creamy. Season with salt to taste and keep warm.
  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). In a large bowl, mix flour, baking powder, salt, and garlic powder. Cut in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in shredded cheddar, add milk, and mix gently until just combined. Scoop onto a lined baking sheet and bake for 12–15 minutes until golden brown.
  • Steam or boil broccoli florets until just tender, about 4–5 minutes. Drain well, toss with butter, and sprinkle shredded cheese over the hot broccoli to melt. Lightly season with salt.
  • Pat steak pieces dry and season with salt and pepper. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and melt 2 tablespoons butter. Add steak in a single layer and sear 2–3 minutes without stirring. Flip and cook another 1–2 minutes. Reduce heat, add remaining butter and minced garlic, cook 30 seconds until fragrant, spoon garlic butter over steak, and serve immediately.

Notes

Use sirloin for a leaner option or ribeye for extra richness. Pat the steak dry before searing to ensure a golden crust. Warm the milk before adding to mashed potatoes for a smoother texture. Keep butter cold when making biscuits for flaky layers. Adjust salt levels across all components for balanced flavor.
