Ingredients
  

  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup milk

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan thoroughly to prevent sticking.
  • In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Stir in brown sugar until smooth and bubbling. Pour into the pan and arrange apple slices on top.
  • In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  • In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each. Stir in vanilla extract.
  • Gradually add dry ingredients alternating with milk. Mix until just combined.
  • Pour batter over apples and smooth the top. Bake for 35–40 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Cool for 10 minutes, then invert onto a plate so apples are on top. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

Use firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for best texture. You can substitute plant-based butter and milk for a dairy-free version. Avoid overmixing the batter to keep the cake light and tender. Let the cake cool slightly before inverting for a clean release.
