Ingredients
  

  • 6 slices white or sandwich bread, crusts removed
  • 3 tbsp softened butter
  • 6 slices ham (or turkey/vegetarian slices)
  • 150 g aged cheddar, cut into thick fingers
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • cups panko breadcrumbs
  • cooking oil, for deep frying

Instructions
 

  • Flatten each slice of bread with a rolling pin until thin but not tearing. Spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side.
  • Place a slice of ham on the buttered side, then add a stick of cheddar. Roll the bread tightly around the filling to form a cylinder.
  • Secure each roll with a toothpick and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up.
  • Dip each chilled roll in beaten egg, ensuring full coverage. Roll in panko breadcrumbs until fully coated.
  • Heat cooking oil in a small pan to medium-high. Fry each roll for about 5 seconds per side, just enough to get golden and crispy.
  • Remove toothpicks. Slice each roll into bite-sized pieces and serve immediately.

Notes

Customize by swapping ham for turkey, chicken, tofu, or vegetarian slices. Try different cheeses like mozzarella, gouda, or havarti. Chill rolls to prevent cheese from leaking and fry just until golden.
