Equipment

  • large wooden board or serving tray
  • small serving bowls
  • cheese knives
  • serving utensils

Ingredients

  • 6 oz assorted cheeses (cheddar, brie, gouda, manchego, goat cheese)
  • 12 oz assorted cured meats (prosciutto, salami, capicola, soppressata)
  • 1 cup mixed nuts (almonds, pistachios, cashews)
  • 1/2 cup olives or cornichons
  • 1/2 cup hummus or whole-grain mustard
  • 2 cups fresh fruit (grapes, apple slices, pear slices, berries)
  • 1/2 cup dried fruit (apricots, figs, dried cherries)
  • 8 oz assorted crackers and sliced baguette
  • 2 oz dark chocolate pieces (optional)

Instructions

  • Choose a large wooden board, marble slab, or serving tray. Make sure it’s big enough to avoid overcrowding. If serving a crowd, use multiple boards. Set out small bowls for olives, nuts, and spreads.
  • Space cheeses evenly around the board, leaving room between each piece. Keep soft cheeses whole for visual appeal and partially slice hard cheeses for easy serving.
  • Fold or roll thin slices of cured meats for texture. Arrange salami in overlapping rows or gentle folds and place meats near cheeses they pair well with.
  • Nestle small bowls into open areas and fill them with olives, mustard, jam, or hummus to anchor the layout visually.
  • Tuck grapes into corners, scatter nuts in clusters, and add dried fruit in small piles to fill gaps and create an abundant look.
  • Place crackers along the edges or stack neatly. Avoid crowding them against moist ingredients and keep extra crackers nearby for refills.

Notes

Plan for about 2–3 ounces of cheese and 2 ounces of meat per person for an appetizer portion. Remove cheeses from the refrigerator 30–45 minutes before serving for best flavor. Use small bowls for moist ingredients like olives, jam, and hummus. For a vegetarian version, skip cured meats and add roasted vegetables, marinated tofu, or extra nuts. Adjust quantities based on guest count and serve fresh for best quality.
