Equipment

  • baking tray
  • oven or broiler
  • knife
  • cutting board
  • spoon or spreader

Ingredients

  • 2 slices rustic sourdough or country bread
  • 6 slices shaved halal beef ham
  • 1 cup Gruyère or Swiss cheese, shredded
  • 2 Roma tomatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp butter, softened
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.5 tsp dried oregano
  • salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (optional garnish)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) or set it to broil. Place the bread slices on a baking tray and lightly spread softened butter over the top of each slice.
  • Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard over the buttered bread to add a subtle tangy flavor.
  • Arrange the shaved halal beef ham evenly on top of the bread, folding slices slightly to create height and even coverage.
  • Sprinkle a generous layer of shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese over the ham so it melts evenly.
  • Place the thin slices of Roma tomatoes over the cheese and season with garlic powder, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper.
  • Bake for 8–10 minutes until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden. For extra browning, broil for 1–2 minutes while watching closely.
  • Remove from the oven, sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley if desired, and serve immediately while hot.

Notes

Use thick rustic bread to support the toppings without becoming soggy. Fold the ham slices slightly for better texture and coverage. Watch the broiler carefully if using it to avoid burning the cheese. Gruyère can be substituted with Swiss, mozzarella, cheddar, or mild provolone depending on preference.
