Equipment

  • medium bowl
  • skillet
  • cutting board
  • sharp knife
  • air fryer or oven

Ingredients

  • 4 crispy fried chicken tenders (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1.5 cups chopped romaine lettuce
  • 0.5 cup dill pickles, sliced
  • 1 tbsp pickle brine
  • 0.25 cup thinly sliced red onion
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 2 tbsp butter (for toasting)
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp prepared horseradish
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp hot sauce (adjust to taste)
  • 0.25 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 0.5 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.5 tsp onion powder
  • to taste salt and black pepper

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, brown sugar, horseradish, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, cayenne, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until smooth and creamy. Refrigerate while preparing the rest of the sandwich.
  • Slice the hoagie rolls lengthwise. Spread softened butter on the inside of each roll. Toast in a skillet over medium heat until golden brown. Remove from heat and set aside.
  • Reheat the fried chicken in an air fryer at 375°F for 4–5 minutes until hot and crispy, or warm in the oven. Avoid microwaving.
  • Chop the crispy chicken, romaine lettuce, pickles, and red onion into small, bite-sized pieces on a cutting board.
  • Drizzle several spoonfuls of Alabama white sauce over the chopped mixture. Add a splash of pickle brine. Toss to coat evenly.
  • Spoon the chopped mixture into each toasted roll. Drizzle extra sauce on top if desired and serve immediately.

Notes

Try substituting baked or grilled chicken for a lighter version. Swap half the mayonnaise with Greek yogurt for a protein-rich sauce. Adjust the spice by reducing cayenne or hot sauce. Serve immediately for best texture.
