Equipment

  • skillet
  • wooden spoon
  • air fryer
  • tongs

Ingredients

  • 0.5 lb lean ground beef
  • 0.5 cup chopped yellow onion
  • 0.5 tsp minced garlic
  • 0.5 cup ketchup
  • 0.5 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.5 tbsp yellow mustard
  • 0.5 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 4 hot dog wieners
  • 4 hot dog buns
  • 0.33 cup shredded nacho cheese blend

Instructions

  • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon. When the beef is halfway browned, add the chopped onion. Continue cooking until the beef is fully cooked and the onions are soft. Drain any excess grease if needed.
  • Add the minced garlic and cook for 1–2 minutes until fragrant. Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, brown sugar, and onion powder. Mix well and simmer for a few minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 380°F (193°C). Place the hot dogs in the basket in a single layer and cook for about 3 minutes, until heated through and lightly crisped.
  • Place each hot dog into a bun. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture generously over the top and sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the meat.
  • Return the assembled sloppy joe dogs to the air fryer and cook at 380°F for 4–6 minutes, until the buns are lightly toasted and the cheese is melted and bubbly. Serve immediately.

Notes

Do not overfill the buns to keep them easy to handle. Use sturdy bakery-style buns for best results. Preheat the air fryer to ensure even toasting. Line the basket with parchment if cheese melts over for easier cleanup. The sloppy joe mixture can be made up to 2 days ahead and stored in the refrigerator. Freeze the meat mixture (not assembled dogs) for up to 2 months. Assemble just before air frying to prevent soggy buns.
